My Neighbors the Yamadas is the story about the daily life of the Yamadas, a typical Japanese family. They are a family of five with Takashi, the father, who works hard for the family and Matsuko, the mother, who is a careless funny person, a grandmother, a son, a daughter, and a dog.
This film shows us many short stories and there are lots of issues in their daily life. For example, a husband-and-wife fight worrying about their adolescent son, but cooperate and solve these problems together, which makes their familial ties strengthen and grow even further.
My Neighbors the Yamadas is an easy film to watch, as it is very playful and comedic.
My Neighbors the Yamadas shows the family’s daily life, which is made up of everyday events, so audiences can relate to the Yamadas. Even when something happens, the Yamada family just says, “Que Sera Sera“ because nobody knows what else will happen in the future, so don’t be hard just take it easy. Audiences also see their family ties from every episode in this film such as love between husband and wife, parents and children, brother and sister, and grandmother and grandchild.
Personally I like My Neighbors the Yamadas because this film is really simple. I can laugh and feel surprised in every moment without thinking. The adorable characters and character’s voices and music suit the film.
However, this film is totally different from other Ghibli films.
The story and animation style of this film differs greatly from the studio’s other technologically sophisticated films or even films with deep stories like Princess Mononoke or Grave of the Fire Flies. If you go in looking for something like that you might be a little disappointed.
However, if you would like to laugh or feel something simply, I highly recommend this film. When you face a difficult situation, you might just find yourself saying, “Que Sera Sera“ like the Yamadas.
